I completely agree. I began my career when I got back from Vietnam. My schooling was as a biologist and I had no formal training in software development.

In the 47 years that followed I’ve filled about every technical role in the commercial software industry from programmer, thru tech lead and VP of R&D, to CEO and I’ve lived the lessons you describe. Now days, I’m working as a software architect and am still having the time of my life. I cannot imagine a more useful and enjoyable profession.

Thanks for your article, I’ll be forwarding it to my grandchildren.
