I hope that the government mechanisms that surround Trump will force him out if he loses, but I do not underestimate the power of self-delusion in human behavior. Trump is too badly damaged psychologically to respond to anything but his own perceived (not necessarily real) self interest.
Most of the 138,000 American pandemic deaths might have been prevented if Trump were a sane, rational, and competent leader. Instead, he saw the novel corona-virus as a personal political attack and ignored its real-world consequences. Trump sees any opposition as a political conspiracy against Donald J. Trump.
Trump has been selling his followers on the ideas of fake news and anti-Trump conspiracies for his entire first term. He has also floated the idea that the police and military would rise up and support him if his re-election were stolen from him. As a former Army officer I cannot imagine that happening, but I can imagine the more rabid of his supporters taking to the streets in violent action if he loses.
I, personally, have moved far past the "it can't happen here" perspective. Too many Constitutional norms have already been violated. The Senate refuses its obligation for oversight, and the Attorney General has stated in writing that he believes that Presidential powers have few, if any, limits. Abraham Lincoln guaranteed that a free and fair election was held in the midst of a civil war. Conspiracy theorist, Donald Trump, is trying to suppress mail-in voting in the midst of a pandemic.
Dr. Wish, please don't promote wishful thinking in a time of real danger. At this time, American's cannot afford political complacency. Trump's defeat must be clear and decisive. He'll fight anything else tooth and nail.
