One of the most obvious dangers is the way Trump and Fox have painted any opposing information as “fake news” and have used the oxymoron of “alternative facts”. Facts are facts though people may assign differing meaning to them, there are no alternative facts. The most serious danger is the erosion of the Constitutional guarantees of democracy and due process.
Aided and abetted by the Senate Majority Leader and the Attorney General no President in American has ever so blatantly ignored Constitutional norms. That may not seem dangerous to you, but it is being used by the President to assume powers not granted by the Constitution and to hide gross malfeasance and incompetence. The President, fearful of his declining political support has even suggested delaying the 2020 Presidential Election, another power not granted him by the Constitution.
One of the obvious results of this incompetence is the unnecessary deaths of over 150,000 Americans from a pandemic that has been brought under control in the rest of the developed world. All while the President tells us what a wonderful job he has done — as he ignores the advice of medical experts, orders testing slowed down to hide the numbers, and spreads misinformation that makes fighting the pandemic harder.
If that isn’t enough to scare you, he has sent Border Patrol agents, dressed in military camouflage uniforms without insignia, into American cities without the invitation of the governor or other local authorities — another egregious violation of Constitutional norms — all on intelligence in which his own Homeland Security intelligence officers say they have little confidence. From all credible evidence, those agents turned relatively peaceful, and Constitutionally sanctioned, protests into violent confrontations.
I was a lifelong Republican and an Army officer. I led riot control troops after Martin Luther King, Jr’s assassination and troops in Vietnam. I knew this man was dangerous and incompetent before he was elected, and I’ve been appalled by how much more dangerous and incompetent he really is — and even more appalled by how much the McConnell Senate and the Barr DOJ have enabled his illegal behavior.
