Sergey, have you ever managed or operated an email server? Before the advent of Gmail, I did. I was thrilled when Google took over that burden for me.
I watched as more and more of my time was taken up combatting SPAM. It ate up my network bandwidth (an expensive commodity back then) and burned up an ever increasing proportion of server CPU cycles in a losing battle to filter SPAM. It was a battle in which I was outnumbered and outgunned by spammers.
18-years ago, Google and Gmail took that burden from me. I do not find their business model problematic in relation to its benefits to me. I am not going back!
