Why We Cannot Kick the Can Down the Road
There is little doubt that the 25th Amendment to the Constitution could be used to remove an obviously mentally incapacitated President, if only the Vice President and the Trump-appointed Cabinet have the moral courage to do so. Unfortunately, that would only solve a part of the our Nation’s problem.
What happens in 2024 if a well-financed Donald Trump, backed by the alt-reality media, makes another run for the White House? Do we want to go through this again? Do we want to give a dark dystopian alternative reality another bite at the apple? Can we afford to give Donald Trump another chance to destroy the Constitution? After all, enough people bought his lies to give him 74,216,722 votes in 2020.
America needs a more permanent solution. We cannot just kick the can down the road and hope for the best. The hundreds of thousands of COVID-19 dead, and the hundreds of thousands of people who died in our wars “to preserve, protect, and defend the Constitution”, deserve better. America deserves better.
Donald Trump must be impeached by the House and convicted by the Senate for the high crime and misdemeanor of inciting insurrection. We have his own actions and words on national TV. He himself is the best witness for the prosecution. If a sufficient number of Republican Senators have the moral integrity and courage to convict, the danger of a future Trump campaign for office would forever be laid to rest. If they do not, we need a Federal prosecutor to charge and convict him of that crime after he leaves office — and hope he doesn’t burn the government down during the remaining days of his term.
18 U.S. Code § 2383 — Rebellion or insurrection
