Will Rogers said: “I’m not a member of an organized political party, I’m a Democrat”. Sad but true. The corrupting influence of money in politics has made both political parties complicit in distorting our financial system and creating the stresses that are tearing our country apart. Trump’s election is a symptom of those stresses.
As a 4th-generation conservative Republican, I can see that the current version of the GOP is so afraid of America’s changing demographics that they will do anything — including destroying free elections and the rule of law — to seize and maintain power. Their current political tactics are strikingly similar to 1930s Europe with the Fox Network as Goebbels and Trump as the a demagogue with a cult of personality. The Democrats are merely inept in comparison.
We need to fix our broken version of capitalism which is siphoning wealth from the middle class to the wealthiest 1% at an accelerating rate — and our broken public education system which has left too many at the mercy of social media propaganda and Fox. There is no chance of either happening with Republican control of the Executive, the Senate, and the Supreme Court. It will be hard enough with Democrats. Time is running out. Historically, democracies (Athens, Roman Republic) fail when they become oligarchies as too small a portion of their citizens control too large a portion of the national wealth. Sitting on the sidelines is not an option.
By the way, Mitch McConnell totally controls judicial appointments and has pretty much blocked progressive bills from the House. You can thank Harry Reed for his nuclear option.
