J.J.. Where did you get the idea that FDR, who with Washington and Lincoln was one of the greatest Presidents in our history, was the “left”? Only the “right” called him the “left” — and of course everyone was to their left. I was referring to the Democratic Party’s left wing. I’m talking about the left wing of the Democratic Party that gave FDR fits as he tried to govern. I’m talking about the fuzzy thinkers who believe they’re all alone on the moral high ground while they ignore the practical requirements of governing. I’m talking about the people whose naivete continues to make the Democrats vulnerable because they refuse to let the party do what it needs to govern.
The Democratic Party is the only American political party to have survived intact from the time of Jefferson. It is the liberal center party that best reflects the feelings of a majority of Americans. I’ve never understood why its own left wing cannot keep themselves from sabotaging it.
I sent you this link when we began our interchange. You were obviously so intent upon refuting what you thought I was saying that you didn’t bother reading it. I think it tracks pretty well with FDR’s Second Bill of Rights. You just wasted all that effort on your last response because you were defending your point of view without listening to the other guy’s. You heard what you expected to hear.
Speaker Pelosi is 80 and I will be 75 in June. I can assure you that neither of us has lost our mental faculties and that we have seen and done more things than anyone your age has had a chance to see or do. I, personally, have travelled and worked around the world, in business and in the Army. All three of us want the same basic things for our country. I believe that you are sincere in your views, but I think you might find it worthwhile to try to listen with as much fervor as you speak. I’ve always found that it is easier to get people’s cooperation when you sincerely listen to them. We old people were young once (I can still clearly see my wife’s face as she was when we first met in 1959), but have you ever been old? Is it possible that we understand a few things about how the world really works that you haven’t had a chance to learn yet? And, J.J., I lived through the Red Scare, did you?
